My wife is addicted to chocolate. So over the past few years she has looked for and found anyway she can to be healthy while still getting in her staple chocolate. Her answer is… "cacao". For those of you who think that's spelled incorrectly, it's not. Cacao is cocoa in it's raw form. From the cacao bean, it is processed using heat and other manufacturing techniques into cocoa. By the time it gets to us in chocolate bars, all the yummy goodness has been processed out of it.

in the 16th century, cacao was cherished, it was actually a form of money and only the wealthiest of people actually ate it. People even had cacao gods that they prayed to.

These people knew the value of the cacao wasn't just the bean itself, but because of the benefits of consuming this mouth watering food. One of the best properties of cacao is it's high content of magnesium. It is said that "over 80% of the US population is deficient in magnesium" (Naked Chocolate). Magnesium supports the heart, increases brain power, helps with bowel movements, relaxes cramping during menstruation, relaxes muscles, and helps build strong bones.

Studies have been done on rats to show that the effect of using cacao as a supplement to increase magnesium levels actually corrected the rats negative effects from the magnesium deficiency.

Not only does it help increase your magnesium levels but it's super high in anti-oxidants. We all know that we want anti-oxidants to make us look and feel younger, right?

The benefits of cacao go on, but really you have to try it to believe it! Cacao tastes different to cocoa and processed chocolate bars. It's more bitter, but still delicious.

There are so many ways to eat cacao, you wouldn't believe me. I suggest if you want to go out and start using this "superfood", you google it and have a look at the recipes. We make delicious smoothies, the most divine chocolate mousse, our son has it on his oats in the morning, chocolate balls… anywhere that you could eat chocolate, you can eat cacao… And then some!

Now the even better thing about cacao, is that usually what you mix it with is also packed with nutrients. In our "mousse" we use, cashews, cacao and bananas. In chocolate balls, we use cacao, dates, nuts, etc… So all of our "treats" are loaded with good for you ingredients. I can actually feel good about giving our son chocolate treats. It doesn't have to be a "reward, but can be a daily occurrence.

So instead of feeling guilty about having chocolate, feel good that you are feeding yourself a nutrient-dense "superfood" and enjoy every morsel. Oh… one other thing I love about cacao is that because it's so rich, you won't want to sit down and binge on it. Healthy for you and not making you fat! Now that's my kind of chocolate.

Here is one of our favourite cacao ball recipes. It's SOO easy to make!

1 cup of walnuts
1 cup of dates (pitted)
1/4 cup of cacao
a small handful of sultanas for a bit more sweetness
Desiccated or flaked Coconut

But them into a food processor and blend together.
Roll into balls and then into coconut.
EAT!

By the way… You can get cacao at your local health food store. Make sure you note the spelling… The store can have cacao and cocoa right next to each other.

When we look at both modalities individually...

Chiropractors work on your nervous and skeletal systems.

As your massage therapist, I work on your muscular, skeletal and fascial systems.

The benefits of us working together on your nervous and skeletal system as well as your muscular and fascial systems in your body creates a longer lasting benefit from the work we are doing.

If you have a massage before (or after) your chiropractic treatment, it will help to loosen the muscles, making the adjustment easier. It will also loosen the fascia around the adjustment sites, helping to prolong the effects of your adjustment. If you remember from my last article about fascia... The fascia wraps around everything in your body. So, if the fascia is bound up and your chiropractor adjusts the bones, the fascia can pull the adjustment out of whack quicker than you would like. So by releasing both the muscle and fascia you will create a longer lasting benefit from your chiropractic treatment.

Not only do your adjustments hold longer if you get a massage. It works the other way as well. Your chiropractic treatment will most definitely make a massage easier and will extend the benefits of having a massage.

Both chiropractic and massage are great individually, but together they are even better!

I know that may seem a bit hard to believe, but let me explain…

Let me first explain fascia and how it binds your muscles. If you ever look at a piece of steak and see the thin white stuff that is in the meat... That is fascia. Fasica is a big web in your body that connects everything. It surrounds all your muscle connecting it to bone, organs, and other muscle. So when it is tight around your muscles it can cause major restrictions in your body.

So what does that mean to you and fat loss? Read the 4 reasons below to discover more…

1. If you have bound up fascia… It leads to restricted range of motion during your exercise, leading to poor form. This leads to injuries and days away from training. Less training, means less fat burning!

2. If you are actually in pain from bound up or tight muscles, this creates stress in your body. Stress in your body sends your hormones out of balance. One of the most crucial parts of losing fat with ease is to have balanced hormones. If you send your cortisol levels (stress hormones higher) you may find that not only will you not be losing fat, you could actually be gaining fat. Yikes!

3. My number #1 rule of training is to do your best to improve your results every time you train. This bound up fascia can prevent you from improving your results. For example… If you are a runner and have bound up fascia in your hips, which is very likely, your stride might be restricted and you may struggle to improve your time each time you run.

It is so important to improve your results every time, because if you are improving you are getting stronger. If you are getting stronger, your metabolism will increase and you will burn more fat. Yeah!

4. If you have bound up muscles… they won’t grow. They will constantly be restricted by the fascia and working against you. When you get a massage using myofascial release technique… you can release this tension. Your muscles will grow and as they grow… your metabolism increases and you can become a fat buring machine. And really… when losing fat, isn’t that what you want?

SCIENTISTS have found a high-fat diet damages a crucial region of the
brain that controls body weight in rodents and believe a similar process
may occur in obese humans.

I can only assume that the study was based on "bad fats", like trans-fats (found in junk food) for example. We know that good fats are actually healthy - sometimes they get a bad rep from studies like this. Many people jump to the conclusion that all fat is bad for you, but this simply isn't true.

In fact, in some individuals, a moderate to high dose of 'good fats' can actually lead to improved brain function, fat loss and a variety of other beneficial effects on the body.

On the flip side, eating bad fats can lead to inflammation through the brain and through the body as well as an (almost) endless list of chronic disease and dysfunction.

When choosing which 'diet' to follow, you will do better on one that contains good fats. These actually balance out any bad fat that you choose to eat.

A low/no fat diet has all sorts of problems associated with it - hormones (our body's messenger) rely on a supply of good fat to work properly. Without it, our hormones get all messed up, and we will actually hold onto fat, rather than burn it.

So much for all the lo/no fat marketing hype!

The easy way to ensure you are getting enough good fat is to regularly take a good quality fish oil supplement and (obviously) avoid eating those nasty trans-fats.

Many of us have, come midnight new years eve, said that 'this year is going to be the year that we're finally going to shift the stubborn unwanted area of body fat'.

Then, 2 weeks later, for whatever reason, we forget!

What is it going to take to actually lose fat this year?

The first step to reaching any of your new years resolution, whether its for fat loss, or anything else, is to come up with a plan.

Once you have that plan, take the first step to making it happen.

Sounds simple, right? It is.

First, you need a plan that is going to work for you.

Next, you will need someone to hold you accountable to that plan. Unless you have a rock solid fat loss mindset, you are going to need people to help you, to push you and to support you in your fat loss journey.

We all come up with excuses as to why we "can't" lose fat. An "excuse proof" plan is a must so that you can finally shift that fat. Once you have started, it is easier to keep going - just make sure you get started.

This is where a personal trainer is SO important. A personal trainer will hold you accountable to showing up. A personal trainer will hold you accountable to doing all the things you know you need to be doing to lose fat (and many of the things you never knew you were supposed to be doing).

A personal trainer who is trained in Biosignature Modulation can help you identify your fat loss roadblocks, and help you blast through them, so that you burn fat faster than ever before.

Without a personal trainer and a well thought out plan, your new years resolution could fall into the pile of new years resolutions that never happened.

Make 2012, the year that you finally shift your stubborn unwanted area of body fat.

Just writing them down isn't enough. You have to take action. This is how I help my clients reach their goals, year after year. We look at the end picture and then break it down into steps.

For instance… if you want to get into your size 8 jeans, and you are in a size 12, then what do you have to do to get there?

Exercise, eat right, take the right supplements and have a great mindset. The problem is just saying that doesn't make it happen either, you actually have to do these things.

Right now, most people are slacking off on all the above as Christmas rolls around and we party and spend time with family and friends. That's ok. Enjoy it! That's what life is about. Just be smart and reasonable with yourself. Every pound you put on, you will have to work off in the new year.

When 2011 comes around, you may say… ok now it's time to get my body into the most amazing shape ever. For many people, all they will ever do is think about it. Are you one of those people? Or are you someone who is going to get up and take action?

If you are an action taker, then clearly write into your schedule when you are going to work out. Treat it as if it's a meeting with an important client, boss, etc. You wouldn't miss those meetings, so don't miss the ones with yourself.

Another tip… pull out paper and pen and write down what you are going to have for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then go to the shops and buy only that. Plan your eating and stick to it.

Whether it's fat loss or any other goal, look at what you have to do and break it down into small, manageable chunks. This way you don't get overwhelmed with the whole picture, you only have to think about the step that you have to take that's right in front of you.

This process can be easy or it can be tricky. I know for myself that even though I can do this easily for other people and their goals, I can struggle with my own. That's when my coaches come in handy. They help me break down my goals and take the necessary steps to achieve them, while holding me accountable.

So, have you taken time to reflect on the past year, yet? Now it's time to write some goals for 2011.

If you looked back at 2010 and realized you didn't achieve any of your goals, then maybe set them a little smaller for 2011, so that you can achieve some of them. If you achieved all your goals, then you might want to think even bigger this year and stretch yourself to create even more for yourself.

One way of doing this is to write a commitment goal and a stretch goal. Write a goal that you are absolutely committed to achieving and will do whatever it takes to get there. Be realistic with yourself. You want to hit this goal. Then, take the same goal and create a bit of a stretch.

For instance, I am absolutely committed to fitting into my size 10 jeans by 10 March, 2011. My stretch goal: I will be in my size 8 jeans by 10 March 2011. Make sense? You can do that with all your goals.

Write your goals down and put them somewhere that you will see them. Make sure you re-visit your goals so that you have a clear path of where you are heading. Sometime we forget about the goal altogether and that makes it pretty hard to achieve it.

Have fun with this! Think big and play lots. This is your life. Make it what you want to.

To creating your dreams…

All the best,

Keri Norley

PS- Remember to take advantage of my special coaching offer: www.targetedfatloss.com.au/kickstart2011. If you haven't already booked your appointment in, then you are wasting time. You may not get a spot.

PPS- I am practically giving it away! Let's make your goals a reality.

It's hard to believe that yet another year has gone by. This time last year, we were packing up boxes to head overseas to spend a few months with family. A year later, we are finally settled back into a home of our own, back in Dee Why. The circle we have come has been huge and a year filled with amazing opportunities and connections made with incredible people.

At this time of year, it's always so good to take some time to reflect on what has happened for you over the past year. Think about what have been your successes and what have been the learnings you made from things that didn't go quite as you planned.

It's important to look at all areas of your life. Think about your career, finances, relationships, health, etc. Of course, you can break these down even further and really break it apart, but how you reflect is up to you. Take some time to write everything down.

For myself, with 4 moves under my belt, raising a gorgeous little boy, (and a big one - my husband), growing our business, working in our business and everything else life hands us… it has certainly been an emotional and wild ride this year.

Most people think we are crazy to do what we did, but it's just the way things worked out. I am so grateful for the year we have had and everything that it has brought us.

In the end, we are stronger; physically from moving LOTS of boxes and furniture, emotionally from coping with the stress of moving 4 times, and as a family unit as we had to pull together and work hard to make everything happen. We also learned how absolutely incredible and supportive our friends, family and clients are. They were there cheering us on and offering a couch to sleep on through all our uncertainty. So many wonderful things have come out of this year for us personally and professionally.

So, make sure you take some time now to write down what has happened for you this year. Then take a moment to write how you can make 2011 even better then 2010. Think of any goals you haven't achieved yet, and see how you can actually bring them to reality.

In order to help you make your dreams come true in 2011, I have put together a coaching special offer. Honestly, if you have ever thought about getting a coach or you know the power of having one..
Not only are we around, we have just moved our house and training studio into amore permanent abode. We have been nomads for the past year, so this is very exciting.

We are settling in and brushing dust of things that have been in boxes for over a year now. If you are anything like our bits in boxes, maybe you feel like you need to be brushed off and picked up to get ready for summer.

Our first tip for you to get your body in shape is to get up and get moving. In winter months, we tend to hibernate and sit around more. If you want to shed the winter layers, get up and move.

In order to do something long enough to make it work for you, you must like what you are doing for exercise. Let me share a bit of insight into this…

As you can imagine, Hugh loves exercise and weight training. For the past year or so, I have really struggled to enjoy it. The reason for this is because I love lifting heavy weights (not piddley weights for high reps). I had lost so much muscle while I was pregnant, that it took awhile to build up again, During that time, I was lifting lighter weights and more repetitions. To me, I might as well be sitting watching cars go by and yawning. I was bored. Yet, I couldn't lift any heavier. After having a c-section my core just couldn't handle it. I persisted through it and have gotten to the point where I can lift heavy again (yay)!

When I lift heavy weights, my training sessions are very different. I have more sets and less repetitions. I go hard and go home. Each movement takes my focus and concentration and at the end of my workout, I feel pumped and like I have achieved something. This is what I love! I get excited to get into the gym again. Each time I'm there, i'm looking to break my previous records by lifting heavier each time. I amaze myself that I am able to get better every time. There are so many reasons I love training this way, but it's not for everyone, which is my point.

One of my good friends and a client of ours is constantly looking at the record board and wanting to beat my records. For her, training heavy is brutal and not something she particularly loves, but the idea of doing 500 squats seems like a great challenge to her. To me… sounds like one of the worst ideas in the world. (Yes, 500 squats is a record on the board by one of our clients.)

Some people like to and feel better for training for endurance and some for more short term bursts of energy. Some people like walking, some running.

If you are struggling or bored with your weight training or if you are not getting the results you are after through the exercise you are doing, then do something different. My workouts change EVERY TIME I train. This is crucial for getting great results.

If you want to learn what exercise is right to help you get your body ready for this summer, then call us today and Hugh can put together new programs for you. Personally, if I was in a gym, running on a treadmill or lifting weights a few times a week and not getting results, I would get bored and stop going. If you are going to go, make it worth your while. Just a few tweaks may make all the difference.

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you get your beach body this summer.

To your summer body…

Hugh and Keri Norley
qualities. You probably already use it, but don't even know it's
helping you.

It can actually help you burn belly fat.

It also has been used to

• reduce blood sugar levels
• help relieve nausea, vomiting, and flatulence
• can be used for it's anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties
• improve circulation

So what is this miracle herb?

Cinnamon!

Honestly, for years this has been one of my favourite herbs to cook
with and it's great knowing the fantastic benefits of cinnamon.

One of the first human studies was published in 2003 in a medical
journal called Diabetes Care. Sixty people with type 2 diabetes took 1,
3, or 6 grams of cinnamon in pill form daily, an amount roughly
equivalent to one quarter of a teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
After 40 days, all 3 amounts of cinnamon reduced fasting blood glucose
levels by 18-29%.

What does this mean to you?

By controlling your blood sugar levels, you are allowing your body to
produce less insulin. One of the biggest factors in packing on the fat
is high insulin levels. So… Reduce your insulin levels and you can
reduce your fat!

How do you use cinnamon to reduce your fat? Eat it!

Buy cinnamon powder (without sugar) and use it as often as possible
in your cooking. You can put it on your oats, smoothies, yoghurt, etc.
I LOVE cinnamon when I make a beef mince dish. I also tend to sprinkle
it on beef that I roast. The smell of it cooking all day long is mouth
watering.

Yesterday, we started experimenting with a cinnamon drink. It's
delicious. Boil 3 tbsp of cinnamon and 1Tbsp of baking soda in 1L of
water. Drink throughout the day. Sounds funny, but it's yummy. Give
it a try, especially if you are craving sweets.

Cinnamon has some very great benefits for you and is so easy to add
into your diet. You don't need much to get the benefits of it. The
study here showed that even 1/4 of a teaspoon made a difference.

If you are on medications (especially for diabetes) please consult
your doctor before any major changes to your diet or supplementation.
Blood glucose levels can dip too low, so be safe.

Where are you going to eat your cinnamon today?

To your fat loss,

If you have never heard about the glorious wonders of raw cacao (This is not a spelling mistake. It is cocoa in it's raw form.), then make sure you check back in here, because I plan on writing about the benefits of it soon. I have been reading a book on the history of chocolate and I was quite honestly blown away by the power of it and nutritional content.

Did you know that cacao beans used to be used as currency? An edible money, hmm…

As a chocoholic, I'm always looking for good ways to eat chocolate, instead of the stuff loaded with sugar from the supermarkets.

I opened up one of my favorite books, Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Mary Enig and Sally Fallon and this recipe was right there… It was delicious and I'm tempted to make it again very soon!

When you look at the recipe it looks a bit finicky. There is a bit of a process but it's easy. I did it with the help of my 15 month young baby strapped onto me in a Baby Bjorn. He loved watching and helping and I could still manage the whole thing.

Also… if you are reading this and know my husband, Hugh, you know that he is anal about what he puts into his mouth and just doesn't eat chocolate or sweets anymore. He usually crashes in minutes when he eats any sugar, fruit included. He had a sliver of this cake (much to my shock) and didn't crash.

Give it a go and let me know what you think. If you have any questions about the ingredients, please feel free to comment here and ask questions. I'm happy to answer. Have fun and ENJOY!

Flourless Cocoa-Coconut Cake

    7 tablespoons arrowroot powder

1/3 cup sifted unsweetened cocoa powder (I used the raw cacao powder that you would find at some health food shops. I have personally never seen it at a supermarket. Yes there is a big difference between raw cacao and cocoa in the way it's been processed.)

    1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

4 egg whites at room temp

    pinch of sea salt

3/8cup Rapadura, Sucanut, or Maple sugar (All healthier sugar alternatives than processed white sugar)

4 egg yolks, at room temp

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    1/4 cup rapadura

1 cup freeze-dried course-cut coconut, plus more to top cake (I actually haven't been able to find this in a shop, but you can toast coconut with maple syrup to get the same idea. In this recipe, I just used organic desiccated coconut and it came out yummy and with less sugar and took less time.)

    2 cups whipped coconut cream

Preheat oven to 350F (about 180C). Butter a 9in springform cake pan and dust with arrowroot. Sift together arrowroot, cacao, and cinnamon. IN a very clean glass or stainless steel bowl, beat egg whites with a pinch of salt until frothy. Gradually add 3/8 cup sweetener. Whip whites until glossy and smooth. Set aside.

In another bowl, beat egg yolks with vanilla until pale in color, about 3 minutes. Gradually add 1/4 cup sweetener and beat until yolks are pale and a thick ribbon falls from the beaters, 6-7min.

With a rubber spatula, fold about 1/3 of whites into yolks. Sprinkle about 1/4 cup of dry ingredients on the yolk batter and fold gently. Continue to alternately fold in egg whites and dry ingredients. Finally quickly fold in the coconut.

Turn batter into prepared pan, gently smooth top and place in oven. Bake 30 min, or until cake pulls away from the sides of the pan and middle springs back if gently pressed. Let cool on a rack about 10 min. Release sides and wait another 10 min before removing cake. Place on a serving plate and chill well. (I didn't chill it). Ice with whipped cream and gently press coconut on top.

To make the whipped coconut cream…
It's meant to whip like dairy cream, but takes awhile. (It was still a bit runny for me after several minutes (like 8min) so I just used it that way and it was still all yummy. Once I put the leftovers in the fridge it solidified into more of a cream.)

    11/2 cups coconut cream

2 tablespoons rapadura, sucanut or maple sugar

1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

Place cream in a large bowl and whip with an electric mixer for several minutes until cream thickens. Add sweetener and vanilla and whip a minute more.

Are you sick of putting on your pants and having a bulge of fat hang over them? Or snuggling up with your partner and feeling self-conscious of them squeezing your love handles?

If so, we have a scientifically proven way to actually target fat loss and help you get rid of love handles.

It's quite simple, really... Your love handles actually relate to your bodies' ability to deal with sugar. If your body cannot deal with sugar then it tends to accumulate body fat on or in your love handles. So if you want to get rid of the love handles then you need to well manage your intake of sugar to start of with and teach your body to be able to deal with sugar long term.

I know this may sound like, well duh... But we know that every part of the body that has excess fat is there for a different reason. To get rid of love handles, you simply must learn to control your sugar levels. With years of abusing our bodies, this can be easier said than done, if you do it on your own.

If you are really committed to getting rid of your love handles then let us show you the way, step-by-step to making it happen with ease. Start to watch the fat melt away by calling us now at +612 8006 1256 or email us at info@targetedfatloss.com.au.

I have a confession to make today. Over the last month, we’ve had a lot of stress in our lives. My husband and I decided to pack up house, move everything into storage and come overseas to the States to stay with my family for a little while. To say the least it was an incredibly crazy, chaotic, stressful month. All while having the holiday and still doing coaching and our business. So, I let some bad old habits to slip back into my life and I really want to come on here and confess to you guys because we are all human.

A lot of times I coach my clients and they feel really bad about "slip-ups" and get all guilty and then drop off the band wagon, altogether. They stop losing weight, they get into bad habits again. They think, “Oh god it’s all over”! Well... It’s not! It’s been 4 weeks that I’ve been eating way too much chocolate again.

In the past that’s been my way of dealing with stress. I also basically stopped exercising for a few weeks because we just didn’t have time. It was chaotic and we have the holidays so we just wanted to chill out. Now, it’s about a month later. I know what I’ve done and I’ve taken the steps that I needed to take to get back onto my own band wagon.

One of the reasons you haven’t heard from me in the last month is because I live in integrity. To me it’s really important that if I’m going to teach you guys stuff and coach, that I’m doing whatever I tell you as well. The videos kind of stopped last month because I think unconsciously, I just couldn’t really pass the word on when I wasn’t fully living what I was preaching.

Here I am, back on the bandwagon, doing all I can do hit my next goal. I actually hit my last goal and dropped down to size 10 after gaining the weight from my pregnancy. Now, the goal is by the 7th of April to be down to US Size 6. Here goes guys, I’m back at it. I’m back at the gym. I haven’t stop eating chocolate completely. I have definitely had it a few times in the last few weeks but there are days that I haven’ t had any. I’m getting back on track again.

It takes an effort and I’m back on the band wagon. After the holidays and with new year’s resolution, if you had any slip ups, any “ooopses”, you hop back on your bandwagon as well and let’s hit our goals. By the way overseas, we’ve moved to the Palm Springs, California area, for the time being. It’s been a lot of fun being gypsies, hanging out. We are at all sorts of different people’s houses and meeting really amazing new people. So we've got some fun stuff happening and that means you guys are gonna learn some really great new things this year. Stay tuned for some regular posts coming up about some not so talked about topics! Trust me... you won't want to miss these, so subscribe to find out when we post next.

Have you ever wanted to get rid of the fat underneath your arms, your batwings, nana flaps, whatever you want to call them. Today we want to talk about exactly that.

We know that you can target fat loss in certain areas of your body by balancing specific hormones, depending on the area of the body you carry fat.

Your fat underneath your arms actually relates to your sex hormones. Now, that’s particularly the male’s sex hormones: testosterone. Testosterone is something that the guys are quite familiar with but also girls have it too.

When girls have an imbalance of sex hormones it accumulates the fat underneath their arms. It happens in guys too. There are guys out there with the testosterone levels of a castrated peanut.

The trick is to bring back the balance of your sex hormones because what you find is that when you do have the body fat underneath your arms then chances are you have a poor sex drive as well. You do not have enough mojo, not enough testosterone to fuel you up or fire you up and balance out your fat loss.
